What Is A Reading Journal?
A collection of thoughts, questions, observations, impressions and judgments It can include drawings, sketches, mind-maps, charts, or quotations A different way of “reading” a novel Your opinions / ideas about a novel A different way to demonstrate your learning and understanding
How Should I Write My Reading Journal?
You will be given 10– 15 minutes every day to complete your reading journal— you must use the same novel everyday. I will collect your Reading Journals every ____________. Each entry should have three short sections as listed below
1. Summarize
Write a sentence or two about what happened in your book today Describe the characters / setting Some ways to start these sentences include:
· I noticed that....
· Today, in my novel...
2. Analyze
General feelings about what you have read Favorite quotations / words Your personal experiences that are related to the novel Questions you wonder about Some ways to start these sentences include:
· A question I have is...
· I don’t understand...
· I now understand why/ what/ how...
· An interesting thought/ word/ sentence was ________ because...
· This story makes me feel...
· I can relate to this character/situation/setting/event/conflict...
· I can compare this character / situation to....
3. Judge
Make Some judgment about a character’s words/actions/opinions A prediction as to what will happen next. Ways to start these sentences include ·
· I predict that...
· I liked / didn’t like it when the character did this...
· I was impressed / disappointed by...
· If I were the character, I would have...
· The best/worst decision made in this chapter was
Final Report
